Gu openly admits she lives four different lives where no second of any day is wasted. However, ‘being a teenager and doing teenager things’ is still very much part of the agenda and her everyday balancing act is compelling viewing.
One of her many passions and interests away from the snow is modeling and she has already forged a successful career in front of the camera. Gu sees many similarities with the two, commenting: “Both have a lot of creative expression, take me out of my comfort zone and require a lot of self-confidence to do.”
The Winter Olympics in Beijing are fast approaching in 2022 and Gu will have the weight of a nation with 1.4 billion people on her shoulders. She says: “It’s obviously a huge milestone which I have been thinking about for a very long time. Right now, it is my No.1 priority. I’m really privileged to have this opportunity.”
Everyday Eileen takes us on the whirlwind journey from high school life in San Francisco to World Championships domination, with training camps in Aspen, model shoots in New York and becoming the first rookie to win three XGames medals in between.
Gu, who in 2019 made “the hardest choice I've ever had to make” in opting to represent her mother’s birthplace China, could have chosen any number of career paths but settled on skiing having first clipped into her bindings aged three.
For someone so talented and who spends so much time upside down in the air, Gu is remarkably grounded, something she has her family to thank for and the special relationship between daughter, mother and grandmother shines through on screen.
The series also shows the joyous moment she was accepted into the prestigious Stanford University, the “only dream I have wanted longer than being an Olympian.”
