Hello, dear reader. We’re back to recap the past couple of weeks, look ahead to what’s coming, and reflect on what sport truly means for us. We’re keen to hear what you think of our quote of the month and we’re also sharing some unrequested cooking advice – yes, it’s zucchini-related!
Over the past month at eyesprint, we’ve been travelling all across Austria and Germany celebrating adventure athletes, collaborating with costumed bike riders and cheering them on.
We returned to Swatch Nines Surf and to the global Mammut Photo Contest, plus, we’re continuing to support runner Tanja Braun in telling the story of her Global Desert Race.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to support The Ocean Race Europe in the German-speaking region, starting in Kiel on August 10. We’re also thrilled to team up with Laura van den Hengel, the 34-year-old Dutch racing talent competing and currently leading in the European GT Open Championship with Porsche.
But, it was actually while watching colourful tandem bikes fall into the Düsseldorf waters at Red Bull Sattelfest that we were reminded of the power of sport. It is, in a fragmented world, one of the rare things that keeps bringing people together in real life, one of the few things that makes us put our phones aside, leave our homes, and join others in cheering for the same team and the same goal.
* We were saddened to hear of the passing of Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, who showed us what pushing limits really looked like.
Diving Deep
Sport is strength, power and resilience. We mentioned it last month – athletes inspire and entertain. But something else happens in those stadiums, on those fields, on those courts: something shared, something communal.
Sports events are much more than games. They’re more than performances, more than branding or betting opportunities – they’re moments that bring emotions, identities and multitudes together.
It’s cheering for the team our grandfather loved, it’s following the journey of an athlete who comes from our hometown.
It’s gathering around the TV with neighbours to watch a game together, it’s driving to a stadium, planning a weekend around a tournament. It’s keeping a space in our heart for a team, an athlete, a sport, and knowing someone else holds it dear, too.
It’s also playing the same game with the same persons since childhood, or finding our people through a shared love for sport when we move home.
It’s multigenerational. It’s cultural. It’s community, theatre and church. It’s “a powerful platform for dialogue”, according to – yes – the United Nations. It’s all of those things. It’s real life, together.
At eyesprint, that means practicing yoga with alpacas and friends in Carinthia, hiking and playing tennis, padel or golf with mates every week. It keeps us moving, it keeps us healthy – but really, it keeps us connected.
Beyond world records and extraordinary performances, that sense of community and shared emotion remains one of the best things about sport. We should all be so lucky to cheer for something, someone, somewhere, and to share that cheer with others.
Our Pick of the Month
At the height of summer, when zucchini seems to multiply overnight in gardens all around Austria, we’re doing everything we can to keep up.
That’s why our pick of the month is a recent gift from UK presenter, football reporter & podcaster Lynsey Hooper: The Garden Chef – Recipes and Stories from Plant to Plate. (Thank you, Lynsey!)
Why this one? Because there’s an epic stuffed squash recipe inside that will make you forget all about your zucchini fatigue. Not into cookbooks? No worries. Check out the zucchini sandwich shared by creator Roberto Avellan right here on social.
From our eyesprint home in Carinthia to yours: may your summer be filled with sun, fun and seriously good food!
Our Quote of the Month
“Do you want it to be good, or do you want it to be yours?”
On the topic of collectiveness and collaboration, these words by fictional speechwriter Tom Yates in House of Cards (Season 3, Chapter 48) evoke the power of teamwork. That quote comes as Yates joins Claire Underwood’s team of writers to help craft a significant speech. Not that we’re comparing ourselves to a corrupt political campaign, but anyone who’s worked in a team will know that there’s truth in those words!
